- NYP reported the possible disappearance of pugs and bulldogs in 10 years due to genetics
Popular dog breeds such as pugs, French and English Bulldogs may disappear in the next 10 years due to health problems related to their genetic predisposition. This was reported on November 18 by The New York Post (NYP).
"Designer dogs, like pugs and bulldogs, have been bred with features such as a flat muzzle, bulging eyes, and wrinkled skin, which can lead to serious health problems, including the risk of infections, impaired mobility, and difficulty breathing," the publication says.
According to the material, breeders strive to correct these anatomical deficiencies with the help of new breeding standards. According to the publication, scientists have developed the Innate Health Assessment (IHA) system, which will evaluate dogs according to 10 criteria, including appearance and anatomical features such as wrinkled skin, flat muzzles, bulging eyes and malocclusion.
According to the new requirements, breeders will be able to breed dogs only with a score of at least eight points. Within five years, the criteria will become stricter, and in ten years the minimum score will be 10, the newspaper writes.
Earlier, on November 15, ABC News reported that modern owners increasingly perceive pets as family members and buy food for them similar to their own food. However, the researchers warned that the diet of dogs and cats has a noticeable impact on the climate. According to the publication, most people eat meat, the impact of which on the environment consists of the animal's habitat, its food, waste and other factors.
