- The Russian Embassy in Romania commented on the consequences of sanctions against Lukoil
Romania is currently in the process of assessing the consequences of US sanctions against Lukoil. This was announced to Izvestia on November 18 at the Russian embassy in the country.
"Romania has not yet taken any specific decisions in connection with the recently announced US restrictive measures against Lukoil's activities. The potential consequences of sanctions may appear later, after assessing their real impact on the regional market," the diplomatic mission said.
The embassy also noted that at the moment it is premature to talk about fuel shortages or disruptions in the work of business entities due to sanctions.
On November 8, Ivan Bogdan-Gruja, Minister of Energy of the Republic, announced that at least three foreign companies were ready to buy Lukoil's assets in Romania. This may be a network of petrol stations or Petrotel refineries in Ploiesti.
On October 22, the US Treasury Department decided to impose sanctions against the Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, as well as their 28 subsidiaries. Later, on October 30, the press service of Lukoil reported that against that background, a deal was agreed to sell 100% of the international company LUKOIL International GmbH to the international commodity trader Gunvor, who, in turn, was banned from issuing a license on November 6. On the same day, Gunvor Group withdrew its offer to purchase Lukoil's assets.
On November 7, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on this situation, noted that the measures taken by the United States and Great Britain harm the global trade regime, as Lukoil is a very large player in the global market.
