The doctor warned about the risks of using weighted blankets
Doctors warn about the risks of using weighted blankets, which are popular as a means to improve sleep. As Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner and occupational therapist at JSC Meditsina, explained in an interview with Izvestia on November 19, although heavy blankets weighing 5-9 kg can really help reduce anxiety due to the effect of deep pressure, reminiscent of hugs, their use is not suitable for everyone and requires caution.
"The principle of operation of weighted blankets is based on deep pressure, which promotes the production of serotonin and melatonin, hormones responsible for calmness and sleep. This may be especially useful for people with mild forms of anxiety, stress, or sleep disorders," she noted.
However, there are serious contraindications: such blankets are categorically not recommended for children under three years of age due to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, as well as for people with chronic lung diseases, heart failure, circulatory disorders, and pregnant women.
Special care should be taken by elderly people with osteoporosis or muscle weakness, who may not be able to cope with removing a heavy blanket on their own.
"There is a risk of overheating due to the low breathability of dense fabrics and the possibility of developing psychological dependence when anxiety only increases without a blanket. Before using a weighted blanket, it is necessary to consult a doctor, especially in the presence of chronic diseases, and in case of shortness of breath, headache or increased fatigue, you should immediately stop using it," the doctor warned.
On October 24, vocal teacher, author of the phonopedic method of voice development and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences Viktor Yemelyanov told Izvestia about the connection of singing with mental health. According to him, such vocal activity can not only improve mood, but also reduce anxiety, help with insomnia and stabilize breathing.
