- The psychologist named the reasons for the lack of motivation to learn from the child
Children often have no desire to study or do their homework. However, this is not always associated with laziness and procrastination. Child psychologist Ekaterina Ilyicheva, in an interview with Izvestia on November 19, explained how to behave correctly to parents in such a situation.
"For elementary schools, the key factor is to adapt to new rules of behavior and teamwork. In the first grade, children spend a lot of energy getting used to the role of a student, so it's not worth demanding perfect assignments during this period," she said.
The specialist recommends giving the child the right to make mistakes and gradually transferring responsibility for collecting the portfolio and other independent actions to him.
The fear of making a mistake can lead to a child refusing to do his homework without parents. In this case, it makes sense to work on self-confidence with a child psychologist. It is important to monitor not only the assimilation of educational material, but also the relationship with the teacher and classmates.
"The lack of friendships in the classroom or bullying situations seriously complicate the learning process. Parents need to maintain trusting contact with their child and help develop strategies for behavior in different situations," the psychologist warned.
She noted that the non—obvious causes of academic failure include dysgraphia and dyslexia, disorders of reading and writing processes associated with the peculiarities of the brain. If by the end of the second grade the child has not mastered these skills, the help of a neuropsychologist and a speech therapist will be required. In addition, a decrease in motivation to study often occurs with excessive demands, when the child does not cope with the program or is under pressure from parents. The psychologist emphasizes that the relationship with the child is more important than good grades.
In adolescents, falling in love becomes a common cause of academic failure, when studying naturally recedes into the background. In such a situation, it is important to maintain a dialogue and share your own experience of overcoming such situations. Teenagers often take parental stories as a model of behavior, so a personal example can help them find a balance between learning and personal experiences.
On September 18, Anna Avdeeva, a medical psychologist at the L.M. Roshal Children's Clinical Center, gave advice on protecting a child from burnout at school. According to her, the main way to prevent this condition may be the correct sleep regime, in which younger schoolchildren need to sleep 10-11 hours, middle school children — 9-10, high school students — eight or nine.
