On the last Sunday in November, Russia traditionally honors women who have given the greatest life value — the possibility of existence. This deeply symbolic holiday, dedicated to great maternal service, has a special social significance and a unique history of calendar consolidation, which fundamentally distinguishes it from most other memorable dates. In 2025, the holiday will be celebrated on November 30th. About why Mother's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in November — in the Izvestia article.

Mother's Day in Russia: how did the date come about and why did the choice fall on the end of November?

The initiative to establish a separate holiday dedicated to motherhood in Russia was discussed in public organizations back in the 1990s. During this period, family support programs were strengthened, and the topics of demography and family values became part of the state agenda. The new holiday was supposed to highlight the contribution of mothers to the upbringing of children and the development of society.

The initiative was consolidated by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 120 dated January 30, 1998. According to the document, Mother's Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of November. This decision made it possible to form a single All-Russian format. The date was chosen outside the period of major public holidays, which simplified the organization of events and made it convenient for schools, cultural venues and social institutions.

— The date selection is more of an organizational nature. In this context, the specific number does not matter in principle: it is more important that the holiday occupies a stable place at the end of the year, when personal results are summed up and attention to loved ones increases," Ekaterina Kosareva, managing partner of the VMT Consult analytical agency, told Izvestia.

She noted that the state sought to allocate a special day in the public calendar dedicated to the role of motherhood and the strengthening of the institution of the family.

Why is the holiday held on the last Sunday of the month?

The "last Sunday" format allows you to keep the holiday weekend every year. This makes it possible to hold events in a relaxed atmosphere and not to postpone them due to the work week. For many families, such a date becomes an excuse to spend time together, and for public organizations it is a convenient guideline when planning programs.

The end of November is traditionally associated with the completion of annual cycles and preparations for the winter season. During this period, personal and family totals are more often summed up, which makes the holiday an organic element of the calendar. It does not overlap with New Year's holidays and major state dates, which allows you to keep an independent place for it and not overload the public space.

The holiday has also become a part of educational and cultural activities. Themed concerts, exhibitions and meetings are held in schools and cultural centers these days. Such initiatives help to develop a festive tradition and maintain attention to the topic of motherhood for many years.

How Mother's Day became part of a cultural and social tradition

For a quarter of a century, Mother's Day has occupied a stable place in the Russian calendar and has become a notable cultural event. In Russia, concerts, public events are organized on this day, awards are presented to mothers with many children and thematic events are held in educational institutions. Gradually, the holiday became not only symbolic, but also a practical reason to discuss family support issues.

The Russian date differs from the international format, in which Mother's Day is more often held in May. However, the lack of a single global standard allows countries to independently shape their traditions. The Russian version, formed in the late 1990s, reflected the peculiarities of the national calendar and social policy. It fits seamlessly into the end of autumn, when attention to the family traditionally increases.

The festive date is also being strengthened through the interaction of government agencies, public organizations and local initiatives. The annual repetition of events forms a stable habit, and the date itself becomes part of the cultural code. Thus, Mother's Day gradually moved from a formal decree to an active socially significant tradition.
