Forecaster denied the possibility of an abnormally cold winter in Russia
An abnormally cold winter is not expected in Russia. The air temperature will indeed be lower than in the same period last year, but we cannot talk about anomalies. Anatoly Tsygankov, head of the Russian Hydrometeorological Service's Crisis Management Department, told Izvestia on November 18.
The expert stressed that it is impossible to give a single assessment for the entire territory of Russia due to its huge size, where at the same time it can be -40 degrees in Yakutia and +9 degrees in Moscow.
"The upcoming winter is highly likely to be colder than the abnormally warm winter of last year, when the snow quickly melted in Moscow in January after the holidays. However, this does not mean that the coming winter will be abnormal," the forecaster noted.
According to forecasts, in most regions the temperature is expected to be above the climatic norm by about half a degree, while in some regions it may be slightly below normal.
The expert noted that it is incorrect to talk about the weather in Russia as a whole, since climatic conditions vary significantly even within the European part of the country, where Crimea and Rostov-on-Don simultaneously show positive temperatures, and frosts are already being recorded in Arkhangelsk. A similar situation will continue in winter, when different regions will be in completely different weather conditions.
Tatiana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, told Izvestia a day earlier that cold and windy weather would be observed in the capital and the Moscow Region during the week of November 17-23.
