Gazprom's structure became the owner of a controlling stake in Aurus
Gazprom's subsidiary Gazprom Tech has acquired a controlling stake (51%) in the domestic luxury car manufacturer Aurus. Vedomosti reported this on November 18, citing two sources familiar with the company's shareholders and an interlocutor at a major carmaker. The deal took place this summer, its amount is estimated at 12-13 billion rubles.
According to the publication, Gazprom has acquired a stake in Aurus, which was owned by the Arab Tawazun foundation (36%) until December 2024, as well as a part of the State Institute of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NAMI. Gazprom Tech was established in 2023 to consolidate assets in the aviation, shipbuilding and automotive industries. The list of Aurus shareholders is now hidden.
At the end of last year, 36% of Aurus, owned by the Arab fund, was transferred to the Russian company Daedalus. FSUE NAMI owned 63.5% of the domestic automaker, the remaining 0.5% was owned by Hit Motors Rus, which is headed by Hans-Peter Moser, the former CEO of Moskvich and a native of Kamaz. Gazprom's plans to participate in the Aurus project have been discussed since October 2023.
According to unofficial information, in 2026, production of cars under the Senat brand will be launched at the former Toyota site in St. Petersburg, the line will consist of two sedans and one SUV. The deadlines for restarting the plant have been postponed several times, as it is assumed that the Russian company has not yet been able to reach an agreement with the Chinese Hongqi (part of FAW), which was supposed to become a production partner of the project.
The agreement on plans to launch production of premium cars at the site of the former Toyota plant was signed by Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, and Aurus CEO at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in 2024.
On November 11, it was reported that the luxury car brand Aurus will receive a second development branch in the form of production of premium cars at the former Toyota site in St. Petersburg. According to Alexander Sitov, Chairman of the Committee on Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade of St. Petersburg, the plant is scheduled to be restarted in early to mid–2026.
