A resident of California, 56-year-old Daniel Saldana, will receive monetary compensation in the amount of $ 19.1 million for spending more than 30 years behind bars on false charges. This was reported on November 17 by the Los Angeles Times.

"The city of Baldwin Park has agreed to pay him $19.1 million to settle a lawsuit accusing a city detective of misconduct in sentencing Saldanha," the publication says.

In 1989, a man was accused of shooting near one of the local schools, injuring two students. All the years he was in prison, Saldana maintained that he was innocent.

In 2017, a review of his case began, and in 2023, the court found that the police detective who investigated Saldanha's case had "performed his duties poorly."

Last year, the victim filed a lawsuit against the authorities of Baldwin Park and former local police detective Michael Donovan, whom his lawyers accused of pressuring witnesses, fabricating evidence and falsifying investigation materials.

Earlier, on September 10, a court in South Korea acquitted local resident Choi Mal-ja, who was convicted more than 60 years ago for biting off part of her rapist's tongue. Her lawyers said they plan to seek compensation from the state for the damage caused to her.
