- Putin signed a law establishing the day of the capture of Konigsberg as the Day of Military Glory
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the establishment of a new memorable date — April 9, the Day of the heroic Assault and Capture of Konigsberg. The relevant document was published on November 17 on the official Internet portal of legal information.
Amendments have been made to the federal law "On Days of Military Glory and Memorable Dates of Russia." The document comes into force from the date of signing.
Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad) was captured by Soviet troops during the East Prussian operation. The assault began on April 6, 1945, and on April 9, the city's garrison surrendered.
On November 11, the State Duma approved a new memorable date — the Day of the Heroic Assault and Capture of Konigsberg. As the authors of the initiative emphasized, the adoption of the document will contribute to the preservation of historical memory, patriotic education of young people and overcoming the historical isolation of the Kaliningrad region from the main territory of the country.
