The history and traditions of Catholic Christmas: the meaning of the holiday and the main rituals

Catholic Christmas, celebrated on December 25, is one of the main Christian celebrations established in honor of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. The date of the holiday was fixed in the church tradition in the IV century. Researchers point to a possible connection between the choice of this day and the pagan winter holidays that existed in Rome, but the church has never officially announced such a synthesis. The central service is the Mass of the Nativity (December 24), as well as three Christmas Masses — night, morning and afternoon, symbolizing various aspects of the mystery of the Nativity.

The traditions of the celebration are characterized by deep symbolism and diversity.
