American liquefied natural gas (LNG) can harm both the European economy and the environment. This was stated by Harry Tsimitras, director of the Cyprus Center for Peace Studies, in an interview with Politico on November 16.

"Currently, American LNG is very expensive, putting a strain on energy budgets, increasing the likelihood of geopolitical contradictions, and the entire project runs counter to efforts to achieve environmental goals, which leads to a delay in the transition to renewable energy sources," Tsimitras said.

The expert stressed that the agreement between Washington and Athens, involving the supply of LNG to Ukraine, threatens Greece's energy strategy. The country will have to significantly increase its LNG storage capacity, which will entail financial difficulties and geopolitical risks. In addition, accelerated construction of storage facilities for these purposes will be required, Tsimitras explained.

Earlier, on November 16, it was reported that the Greek gas company DEPA and Naftogaz of Ukraine signed a memorandum of intent on the supply of natural gas. According to the Reuters news agency, liquefied natural gas (LNG) will flow to Ukraine from the United States and Greece via a pipeline that runs through the Balkan Peninsula from December to March next year.

Prior to that, on November 15, The New York Times reported that Ukraine's state-owned oil and natural gas production, transportation and refining company Naftogaz lost about 60% of its capacity in October. Experts warn that millions of people "will find it difficult to keep their homes warm" in the coming winter.

On November 13, the Politico newspaper reported that the upcoming winter could be the hardest for Ukraine during the entire conflict period. It was noted that the situation in the country is complicated by the financial crisis, corruption scandals and the deteriorating situation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the battlefield.
