US Secretary of State Rubio accused Maduro of leading a drug cartel
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of leading the Los Soles drug cartel and said the State Department intends to recognize the group as a foreign terrorist organization. He wrote about this on November 16 on the social network X.
According to Rubio, the cartel has bribed Venezuelan state institutions and is responsible for "terrorist violence."
"Illegitimate Maduro is the head of the Los Soles cartel, which the US State Department intends to recognize as a foreign terrorist organization," Rubio wrote on the social network.
Earlier, on November 4, it was reported that three key options were being considered within the framework of scenarios of military action against Venezuela developed by the administration of US President Donald Trump. The first involved airstrikes on military targets to weaken support for Maduro, the second involved the introduction of special forces, including Delta and Navy Seals units, to capture or eliminate the Venezuelan leader. The third option involved engaging U.S. counterterrorism forces to control the country's airfields and oil fields.
According to NYT sources, Rubio himself and Trump's homeland security adviser Stephen Miller, who insisted on Maduro's resignation, advocated more aggressive approaches.
