- FT reported on the risk of the EU missing out on benefits due to the slow reduction of US tariffs
The European Union risks missing the opportunity to improve relations with US President Donald Trump due to the slow reduction of tariffs and barriers to American exports. This was reported on November 16 by the Financial Times with reference to the chief US Trade Representative Jamison Greer.
According to him, despite the deal reached in July between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU duties remain high, and "many regulations and non-tariff barriers block our exports and restrict market access."
"We haven't resolved all the issues in our relationship with our joint statement made earlier this year," Greer added.
American officials warn that Europe risks missing the moment to improve relations with Trump if it does not accelerate the implementation of the agreements.
"I hope that Europe will not miss the opportunity to benefit from the president's current approach," said one senior administration official.
Greer will travel to Europe from November 19 to 22 to continue trade negotiations, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will meet with EU representatives on November 24.
Earlier, on November 13, it was reported that disagreements within the European Union were intensifying against the background of the US granting Hungary a one-year reprieve from anti-Russian sanctions. Experts note that the split is manifested not only in the confrontation between Brussels and Budapest, but also in the criticism of individual countries of the union on other issues. Political scientist Alexander Asafov stressed that Hungary is building its own political course and remains a loyal ally of US President Donald Trump.
