- WSJ has learned about the plans of tech moguls to build data centers in space
Major technology entrepreneurs are seriously considering moving data centers into space amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) energy consumption. This was reported on November 16 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to the publication, billionaires are discussing the possibility of flying into space to build giant data centers.
"The moon is a gift from the universe," said American entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, emphasizing the advantages of a lunar base for energy—intensive AI projects.
Expert Phil Metzger, in turn, believes that in ten years space data centers can become profitable, since "AI servers in space are the first real economic justification."
In space, it is possible to "use solar energy more efficiently" — without night breaks, clouds and with simplified cooling, the article explains.
At the same time, billionaire Elon Musk proposes launching AI satellites "powered by solar panels and laser communication," which, according to him, will be able to produce "100 gigawatts of energy per year." Alphabet is promoting the Suncatcher project and intends to launch two test satellites by 2027. Nvidia joined the development through a partnership with Starcloud.
Despite the ambitious ideas, the projects remain experimental, but the growing demand for electricity is already forcing companies to look for solutions "beyond the Earth," the authors of the material write.
Earlier, on September 2, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States had become the "number one" country in the field of space, although they had previously lost the space race to Russia and China. He also added that he plans to move the headquarters of the space force from Colorado to Alabama.
In July, Bloomberg reported that U.S. spending on defense space increased by 7.7% year-on-year to $49.5 billion, an increase of 2.3% from all other countries.
