Fraudsters began calling Russians on behalf of the city administration and stealing data under the pretext of registering in their personal account to receive "payments to veterans of labor." This was announced on November 16 by the Department for the Organization of the Fight against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

The department noted that calls were recorded during which the attackers presented themselves as employees of the mayor's office.

"Pensioners are called, posing as employees of the mayor's office, and informed about the "due payment to veterans of labor", the presentation of diplomas and other awards, but in order to receive them, they must register in their personal account and dictate personal data," the department said in a message posted on Telegram.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that scammers began using new remote extortion schemes, obtaining up-to-date geodata of Russians through dating sites. It clarifies that the attackers establish a trusting online contact, and then use information about the victim's location to pressure.
