Fraudsters have begun using new remote extortion schemes, obtaining up-to-date geodata of Russians through dating sites, the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported on November 16.

According to the agency, the attackers establish a trusting online contact, and then use information about the victim's location to pressure.

The Interior Ministry clarified that the criminals present themselves as law enforcement officers or Ukrainian military personnel and demand money under threats.

"These actions are aimed at intimidating citizens and misleading them in order to give credibility to illegal claims. Such actions do not pose a direct physical threat, but they create conditions for causing significant material damage," TASS explained.

The agency recommended restricting access to personal data, as well as paying close attention to information posted on the Internet, including metadata and geolocation.

Earlier, on November 14, it was reported that the Interior Ministry suppressed the activities of two Telegram channels that provided fraudsters with rented accounts to deceive citizens. The administrators, teenagers aged 16-18, were detained and criminal cases were initiated against them under Article 274.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from the Astrakhan region and the LPR participated in the operation.
