Narcologist warned about the dangers of alcohol for diabetics
Alcohol is especially dangerous for people with certain chronic diseases. Vitaly Holdin, a psychiatrist and narcologist, chief freelance specialist at the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, told about this on Friday, November 14.
So, with diabetes, a person can fall into a hypoglycemic coma from alcohol. Alcohol provokes a sharp drop in blood sugar, as the liver, processing alcohol, stops releasing glucose. This is especially dangerous when treated with insulin or other sugar-lowering medications.
"The risk of coma increases also because the symptoms of sugar drop coincide with the signs of intoxication.: these are drowsiness, dizziness and sweating. As a result, it is more difficult to make a correct diagnosis and start treatment on time," Radio 1 quotes the specialist.
Holdin added that for a diabetic, the risk of hypoglycemic coma increases many times if you drink alcohol on an empty stomach or after physical exertion. 360.ru .
On October 8, the Sohu media portal talked about the symptoms and ways to prevent hypoglycemia. It was noted that not only skipping breakfast, but also lack of nutrition after physical training, alcohol consumption and stress can contribute to a decrease in blood sugar levels.
Earlier, Alexander Mayorov, president of the Russian Diabetes Association, head of the Department of Diabetes Forecasting and Innovation at the Institute of Diabetes of the National Research Medical Center of Endocrinology, said that about 5 million diabetic patients were officially registered in Russia, and the same number of people may not know about their disease, the Moscow City News agency reports.
