- The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed its readiness for a summit with the United States in Budapest
Russia remains ready to hold the second Russian-American summit in Budapest, provided there is a well-developed agenda based on the results of the Alaska meeting. This was announced on November 14 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"With the arrival of the new administration, we have felt a significant desire or willingness to renew this dialogue on their [American] side. Of course, it is not going as fast as we would like," Zakharova said.
She also clarified that after the meeting in Anchorage and the subsequent telephone conversation, there were no personal contacts between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. At the same time, the parties remain aware of the need for regular communication to discuss the Ukrainian issue and the bilateral agenda.
"Contacts will be continued when it becomes necessary <... Moscow is ready for the meeting, provided it is prepared in a meaningful way," she concluded.
On November 13, Lavrov also reported that Russia was still ready to hold a Russian-American summit in Budapest, but a specific date for the meeting had not yet been set. The Minister expressed hope that common sense and commitment to this course will prevail in Washington, and that the American side will refrain from taking steps that could lead to further escalation of the conflict.
