The risk of developing type 2 diabetes has increased in Russia
More than half of Russians (57%) do not know their current blood sugar levels, despite the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Such data was shown by the research "Barometer of Russians' attitude to their health" by NIZHPHARM, which was reviewed by Gazeta.Ru" on November 14, the day of the World Diabetes Day.
According to Rosstat and TSNIIOIZ, at the beginning of 2024, the number of adult patients with type 2 diabetes in Russia exceeded 5 million people. The study showed that 51% of respondents do not take any measures to control sugar levels, and among those who monitor the indicators, the majority use nutrition control (28%) and weight (23%).
Half of the survey participants regularly feel tired and weak, 35% experience blurred vision, 21% experience severe thirst and dry mouth, 17% experience tingling in the extremities, 16% experience frequent urination, 10% experience slow healing of wounds or bruises.
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Marina Shestakova, Director of the Institute of Diabetes of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "NMITS of Endocrinology named after Academician I.I. Dedova", noted that "the data obtained indicate a high level of ignorance and, as a result, the risk of late diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Many symptoms, such as fatigue or blurred vision, are often attributed to stress or age, wasting time. It is extremely important to check blood sugar levels regularly and consult a doctor if there are any warning signs. Early diagnosis is the key to effective disease control."
Earlier that day, endocrinologist Margarita Belousova spoke about the signs that may indicate the development of diabetes, including temporary visual impairment, constant fatigue and slow wound healing. She stressed that sudden abdominal pain, severe nausea and uncontrollable vomiting can signal ketoacidosis and require immediate medical attention, as diabetic coma can develop without therapy.
