- The defendants in the case of the explosion in Sergiev Posad were sentenced to up to five years in prison.
The Sergiev Posad City Court found guilty the defendants in the criminal case of the explosion at the Pyro-Ross warehouse in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of nine people, and sentenced them to up to five years in prison. This was reported on November 13 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.
Sergey Chankaev, the company's technical director, was sentenced to five years in a general regime penal colony. His subordinates, Alexander Varenov and Oleg Yurov, received 4.6 years each in a penal colony of the same regime. After serving their sentence, all convicts will be deprived of the right to engage in activities at hazardous production facilities for three years.
The court confirmed that the tragedy was the result of gross violations of industrial safety requirements. The investigation found that storing about a ton of smoky gunpowder and pyrotechnics in an unintended room led to a powerful detonation. The defendants pleaded not guilty and called the incident a diversion.
The explosion on the territory of the Zagorsky Optical and Mechanical Plant (ZOMZ) on Red Army Avenue in Sergiev Posad occurred on the morning of August 9. As a result of the incident, a pyrotechnics storage hangar leased by the Pyro—Ross company was destroyed.
The Investigative Committee of Russia (IC) has opened a criminal case on violation of industrial safety requirements. After that, footage was released showing the moment of the search and interrogation of the detainee Sergei Chankaev. In November 2025, the state prosecution demanded that Chankaev, Varenov and Yurov be found guilty of violating industrial safety requirements and sentenced to real terms of up to six years in prison.
