The existing disagreements within the European Union (EU) are becoming more noticeable against the background of the US decision to grant Hungary a one-year reprieve from anti-Russian sanctions. This was stated on November 13 by political analyst Alexander Asafov to Izvestia.

According to him, the split in the EU is manifested not only in the confrontation between Brussels and Budapest or the criticism of Hungary and Slovakia from most countries of the union.

"Yesterday we saw a rather pointed statement by the French about the militarization of Germany. This is also one of the existing splits, albeit not very obvious ones," the source said.

The expert recalled that Hungary occupies a special position in the EU and has long been building its own political course, which often contradicts the decisions of Brussels. According to Asafov, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remains one of the most loyal European allies of US President Donald Trump, as well as a consistent opponent of the structures of American trader George Soros. Budapest was the first to recognize these organizations as undesirable.

He added that Washington often acts selectively, taking into account its own interests, while the EU's position is not decisive for the United States.

"No one cares about the opinion of Brussels, London, Berlin and so on on this issue. This is similar to selectivity with regard to the anti—Russian sanctions of the United States itself, when they force Europe, for example, to completely abandon the purchase of certain Russian resources, such as steel, and keep the necessary titans, rare earths and other similar positions," the political scientist said.

Speaking about the possible consequences for Hungary in the event of continued dependence on Russian energy resources, Asafov pointed out that Budapest is already regularly criticized within the European Union and is likely to continue to face pressure, but the country is satisfied with this course.

On the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States had given Hungary a one-year reprieve from sanctions against the purchase of oil and gas from Russia. He also said that the United States had withdrawn Russia's construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in Budapest from sanctions until the project was completed.
