Trump called on the Israeli president to end the criminal prosecution of Netanyahu
US President Donald Trump has sent an official letter to Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog calling on him to consider pardoning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This was announced on November 12 by the Israeli state television and radio company Kan.
"I recommend pardoning Netanyahu, who was a resolute prime minister during the war and is now leading Israel to peace," the state Television and radio company quoted a fragment of the letter.
The American leader stressed that Netanyahu had shown firmness in defending Israel's interests, and his attention should not be distracted by court proceedings. Trump expressed respect for the Israeli judicial system, but called the case against the prime minister unfounded and political.
In response, the Duke allegedly thanked Trump for his support of Israel, but noted that pardon issues should be resolved in accordance with established procedures.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, writes Kan, supported Trump's position, stating the need for an urgent pardon. At the same time, opposition leader Yair Lapid recalled that under Israeli law, a pardon requires an admission of guilt and repentance.
In 2019, it became known that the wife of the Prime Minister of Israel, Sarah Netanyahu, was found guilty of improper use of state funds and ordered to pay a fine of 55 thousand shekels (at that time $ 15.2 thousand) for illegal use of catering services. The bribery case against Sarah Netanyahu began in October 2018.
In February 2019, Israeli Prosecutor General Avichai Mendelblit announced his intention to bring charges against Netanyahu based on an investigation that has been underway for more than three years. The Israeli prime minister was suspected of bribing the media and receiving gifts from businessmen in exchange for patronage. Netanyahu himself has repeatedly denied involvement in corruption and called the accusations a witch hunt. Trump said on June 25 that Netanyahu's trial should be canceled.
On June 27, 2025, the court rejected Netanyahu's request to be excused from testifying in the corruption case. It was emphasized that the request submitted by Netanyahu's lawyer was not the basis for canceling the evidentiary hearing.
Later, on September 29, Herzog made it clear that he could pardon Netanyahu during the corruption trial, saying that "this case puts a lot of pressure on Israeli society."
