Jonathan Powell, the national security adviser to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, tried to establish an unofficial channel of communication with the Russian authorities. This was reported on November 12 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

It is alleged that at the beginning of the year, Powell called the Russian side to convey the position of the UK and EU countries regarding Donald Trump and Ukraine.

"Some allies expressed concern about Powell's contacts "before increased pressure would be exerted on Russia" through sanctions and other measures," writes FT.

The British Prime minister's office told the newspaper that dialogue with Russia is conducted regularly, including through the embassy in Moscow.

On November 10, Chairman of the Finnish Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Johannes Koskinen said that the European Union (EU) countries should identify a commissioner who could conduct a direct dialogue with Russia on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, this representative could be a mediator in developing a unified position on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
