Syria needs Russia's support due to the fact that it is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This was announced on November 11 by the President of Syria for the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

"We need Russia because it is a permanent member of the [UN] Security Council. We need their voice to be on our side on some issues, and we have strategic interests with them," he said in an interview with The Washington Post.

According to the Syrian leader, Damascus is aware of the importance of maintaining constructive relations with Moscow in order not to push Russia towards "alternative options" in the Syrian settlement. At the same time, al-Sharaa emphasizes that the Syrian side reserves the right to demand that ex-President Bashar al-Assad be brought to justice.

Al-Sharaa also noted that Russia and Syria are "still at the beginning of the path" of building a bilateral dialogue.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with al-Sharaa in the Kremlin on October 15. During the meeting, the Syrian leader said for the transitional period that the Russian Federation would have a serious role in the development of a new Syria. He noted that the new authorities of the country intend to restart relations with Russia.

Later, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani said that currently there are no new agreements between Syria and the Russian Federation, the side sees the revision of previous agreements as the main point of the interstate dialogue. The diplomat also said that one of the points of negotiations is the Russian military bases in Syria.

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, in turn, said on October 28 that the meeting of the leaders of Russia and Syria had contributed to the comprehensive development of relations between the military departments of the two countries. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, in turn, said that Russia maintains intensive contacts with Syrian representatives.
