In Russia, the number of cases of community—acquired pneumonia is increasing - the figure is 629 cases per 100 thousand people. This was announced on November 12 by Sergey Avdeev, chief freelance pulmonologist at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Director of the Clinic of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at Sechenov University.

According to the expert, at the same time, the mortality rate remains stable and remains at the level of eight cases per 100,000 population.

"The incidence is gradually increasing, but the mortality rates are stable from year to year," he told RIA Novosti.

Avdeev added that among the symptoms of pneumonia are cough and sputum production, as well as signs unusual for common colds — shortness of breath, chest pain when breathing and hemoptysis.

Earlier in the day, Rospotrebnadzor recalled that pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue, most often caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. The ministry stressed that the disease is most severe in the elderly and patients with chronic diseases, and timely vaccination and hygiene measures remain the most effective way to prevent it.
