- The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry rejected Lukashenko's proposal to reopen the checkpoint
The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kastutis Budris, rejected the proposal of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, to reopen checkpoints on the border between the countries. This was reported on November 11 by the Reuters news agency.
"My urgent recommendation to my government will be not to follow the path that they (the leadership of Belarus. — Ed.) they are trying to impose on us," he said.
According to Budris, Lithuania plans to enlist the support of the United States in resolving the issue of opening the border. The Lithuanian diplomat tried to agree on this at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Monday, November 10.
Earlier in the day, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to organize negotiations with Lithuania to normalize the situation on the joint border. It was noted that the organization of the negotiation process was entrusted to the Secretary of State of the Security Council, Alexander Volfovich. The decision was made after receiving proposals from the Lithuanian authorities to resolve the border situation.
On October 29, Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus for a month. According to the government decree, the last two checkpoints, Myadininkai and Shalchininkai, have been shut down. Exceptions are made only for diplomats, transit traffic to Kaliningrad, as well as for citizens of Lithuania and EU countries.
