Thai Prime Minister Charnvirakul suspends peace agreement with Cambodia
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the suspension of the peace agreement with Cambodia after two Thai soldiers were injured in a mine explosion on the border. This was reported on November 10 by Bloomberg.
"Everything we have done so far will be stopped until there is more clarity," Czarnvirakul stressed.
According to him, the incident shows that hostility at the border has not decreased, and further steps under the agreement are impossible until the circumstances are clarified.
The agreement provided for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and cooperation on mine clearance, as well as the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, which is now postponed. This is the seventh such explosion in four months in the border area.
Earlier, on October 26, it was reported that the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia, signed at the ASEAN summit in the presence of US President Donald Trump, was supposed to help de-escalate the conflict and strengthen trust between the countries. As part of the agreement, it was planned to withdraw heavy weapons from the border, establish joint mine clearance and improve control over border areas.
