Nauseda nominated Robertas Kaunas for the post of Lithuanian Defense Minister
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has appointed Robertas Kaunas as the new Minister of Defense after the resignation of Dovile Shakalene. This was announced on November 10 by the Delfi portal.
According to the newspaper, Nauseda met with Kaunas twice last week. After the second meeting, the politician stated that he had heard from the president a promise to make a decision in the near future. At the same time, doubts about his competence are voiced in Lithuanian political circles: Kaunas has no experience in the defense sector and has been a member of the Seimas Committee on national security and defense for only about a month.
The post of Minister of Defense became vacant after the departure of Deauville Shakalene amid disagreements with the Prime Minister on financing issues. Currently, Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich temporarily performs the duties of the head of the department.
Earlier, on September 19, it was reported that Shakalene admitted the possibility of harsh NATO actions in response to the alleged violation of Estonian airspace by Russian aircraft. She stated the need for a serious approach to ensuring security on the eastern border of the alliance.
