- The political scientist named the reasons for Sarkozy's release by the Paris Court of Appeal.
The Paris Court of Appeal has granted a request for the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from prison, but the politician remains under strict restrictive measures. As Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, noted in an interview with Izvestia on November 10, this decision does not negate the fact of a public political massacre of the former head of state.
According to the expert, Sarkozy became the first leader of an EU country who had to serve a real term in prison, which caused serious damage to France's international reputation.
"The initiators of this trial were finally satisfied that Sarkozy's figure was publicly trampled into the mud, and decided to release the middle—aged former politician under humiliating restrictions," Feldman said.
The political scientist suggested that the court's decision could have been influenced by awareness of the risks of further detention of the ex-president in prison, where other prisoners repeatedly threatened to kill him. The possible death of Sarkozy behind bars would be a disaster for the image of the current government, the professor noted.
Feldman stressed that the mitigation of the preventive measure does not negate "the severity and cynicism with which the former head of France was executed."
"The politician, although formally at large, remains deprived of his rights, deprived of state awards and disgraced in the eyes of the public," Feldman said.
Earlier that day, the court decided to release Sarkozy from prison under judicial control. As part of the release, a number of prohibited actions are provided for Sarkozy. For example, the former French president cannot leave the country, communicate with other defendants in the case, or contact Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin. If these conditions are not met, Sarkozy may be returned to prison.
On October 21, Sarkozy arrived at the Sante prison in Paris, where he was supposed to serve a five-year sentence in solitary confinement. On September 25, it was reported that a Paris court sentenced the French ex-president to five years in prison in the case of illegal financing of his election campaign from Libya. In addition, Sarkozy was fined 100,000 euros.
