In Ecuador, 31 people died in a prison riot.

The Ecuadorian authorities have discovered the bodies of 31 prisoners after a riot in Machala prison. This was announced on November 10 by the press service of the National Service for Comprehensive Assistance to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Juvenile Offenders (SNAI).

"At the moment, 27 prisoners have been reported dead," reads a message posted on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to SNAI, the bodies of four victims of the riots had previously been found in the prison. The agency confirmed that the relevant authorities are working to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.

On September 25, at least 17 people died in a riot at Esmeraldas prison in northern Ecuador. It is specified that this riot occurred after another incident in prison that claimed the lives of 14 people this week. Ecuador has been suffering from a series of prison riots for several years, in which hundreds of prisoners have died.
