- AP has learned about Europe's forced financing of US military bases due to the shutdown
Some European states are forced to maintain military bases of the US Armed Forces on their own due to the outbreak of the longest shutdown in the history of this state. The Associated Press (AP) learned about this on November 10.
"Thousands of people working for (American. — Ed.) foreign bases in Europe, have been deprived of salaries since the shutdown began almost six weeks ago. In some cases, the governments hosting the American bases intervened to pay the bill, expecting the United States to eventually fix the situation," the article says.
It is specified that we are talking at least about employees involved in Germany. The authorities of this country confirmed that they intervened in the work of the bases to help the people employed there, whose number reaches 11 thousand people. Spain also fulfilled the obligations of the United States to employees, which provided funds to 1,000 people in this situation.
The problem is currently being discussed in Italy. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this state contacted American officials in order to clarify whether they should independently give money to about 2 thousand fellow citizens who work at five US bases located on the territory of the republic.
At the same time, the governments of Poland, Lithuania and Greenland did not respond to AP's request for comment on the status of payments in their countries.
Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, warned on November 7 that the government's suspension on October 1 could lead to long-term negative consequences and was already causing more damage to the American economy than expected.
CNN reported on November 9 that the bill, the approval of which was necessary to complete the shutdown, passed a procedural vote in the US Senate. It was clarified that the agreement was reached through a preliminary agreement between representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties, whose disagreements gave rise, according to CBS News, to the lack of an "imminent breakthrough" in this case.
