- The media reported that the Japanese minister was reprimanded for speaking about the Kuril Islands.
Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan Minoru Kihara expressed censure to the Minister of Okinawa and the "northern Territories" Hitoshi Kikawada for his statement in which the territories of the Kuril Islands disputed by Japan were called foreign. This was reported on November 10 by the 47news news portal.
It is noted that on November 8, during a trip to Hokkaido Prefecture, Kikawada visited the northeasternmost point of Japan, Cape Nosappu in Nemuro, from where the Kuril Islands are visible.
"This is probably the closest place to a foreign country," he said.
The phrase was interpreted as an allusion to the Kuril Islands belonging to Russia.
