On November 9, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during the celebration of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, said that the threat to the country's democracy had never been in history.

"Never before in the history of our united country have democracy and freedom been subjected to such attacks," the Berliner Zeitung newspaper quoted the president as saying.

According to him, at the moment, the main threat comes from right-wing extremist forces that receive approval for violence. In addition, he added that "populists and extremists" profit from fears and urged citizens to act to protect the state.

The American newspaper The New York Times reported on November 7 that many residents of the former GDR continue to feel sympathy for Russia, because expectations for an improvement in living standards after unification with Germany have not been fulfilled. According to the publication, residents of the eastern part consider themselves losers from economic and social transformations, which has strengthened and revived their love for Russia.
