A giant wave washed tourists off a Tenerife pier, eyewitnesses filmed it on video
Giant waves have hit the coast of the Spanish island of Tenerife, killing three people and injuring 15 others. This was reported on November 9 by the newspaper El Periodico.
"Fifteen people were injured in various degrees of severity during strong waves," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the tragedy occurred in the coastal areas of the cities of Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Among the dead were a 79—year-old Dutch citizen, a 43-year-old resident of La Orotava and another man, whose identity was not disclosed.
Eyewitnesses said that in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, several tourists ended up in the sea behind buoys after they were covered by a powerful wave.
According to Periodico, all the incidents were the result of the carelessness of people who went out to the water despite the storm warning. Footage posted by eyewitnesses shows how a huge wave crashes onto a two-level pier, knocking people off the top platform into the sea.
On October 20, a Russian tourist drowned in Phuket, Thailand, despite the efforts of rescuers to save his life. According to the victim's wife, her husband swam for about 30 minutes before signaling for help. As a result, rescuers found him unconscious in the water.
