Australia stopped directly purchasing Russian oil after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, but has imported more than 3 million tons of petroleum products from Russia since 2023. The Guardian writes about this on November 9 with reference to the European Center for Energy and Clean Air Research (Crea).

According to Crea's Europe analyst Vaibhav Raghunandan, Australia's sanctions prohibit direct purchases, but allow purchases through third countries.

"This is a significant loophole used by Australian buyers," Raghunandan said.

It is noted that most of the Russian oil enters Australia through Singapore. According to an analysis of Kpler trade data conducted by Mark Corrigan, an Australian chemical engineer, and confirmed by Crea, Singapore has received more than 22 million tons of petroleum products from Russia since January 2023.

On October 22, the US Treasury Department announced that the United States was imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The Bloomberg news agency wrote at the time that state-owned oil refineries India is looking for an opportunity to continue buying some of the Russian oil at a discount, relying on small suppliers instead of energy giants from the US blacklist.

In turn, Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of the Indian energy company ONGC, said that the company would continue to buy Russian oil through traders who were not affected by international sanctions.
