Hundreds of people are missing after a boat sinks near Malaysia
Hundreds of migrants went missing, 10 survived and one person died after their boat sank near the Thai-Malaysian border, Reuters reported on November 9, citing Malaysian authorities.
According to Romli Mustafa, director of the maritime administration of the northern Malaysian states of Kedah and Perlis, the number of victims may still increase, as there were about 300 people in the boat.
The survivors included three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya men and one man from Bangladesh. The deceased is a Rohingya woman.
It clarifies that members of the predominantly Muslim Rohingya minority periodically flee Buddhist Myanmar, where they reportedly "face ill-treatment."
Earlier in the day, Yonhap news agency reported that a fishing boat with 11 passengers on board capsized in the Yellow Sea, killing two people and leaving three others missing. It was clarified that the boat sank off the southwestern South Korean island of Gageo at about 06:50 (00:50 Moscow time). The other six passengers were rescued by another Chinese vessel.
