Old dollars can still be exchanged in some places, but this opportunity is short-lived, and Russian banks are not required to accept this old-style currency. This was announced on November 9 by Mikhail Gordienko, Professor of the Department of Finance for Sustainable Development at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

According to the expert, because of the sanctions, Russian banks cannot directly interact with American ones by handing over old banknotes to them, and are forced to look for workarounds to sell them, risking in the process. In addition, such money is often perceived as fake.

"Russian banks are not required to accept such dollars, even if they formally remain a legitimate means of payment," Gordienko explained in an interview with the Prime agency.

According to the expert, it is possible to find branches of large banks that still accept old dollars, but the exchange will take place with a loss in exchange rate. Another possible option is to exchange old dollars for rubles in foreign branches, but there are no guarantees in this case.

Earlier, on May 23, Yulia Khandoshko, CEO of the European broker Mind Money (ex Cerih), said that the number of new dollars in the Russian Federation may be decreasing due to the global trend towards a decrease in cash turnover, as well as due to the peculiarities of the Russian market and the shortage of cash imports into the country.
