The reason for the abduction of a family from St. Petersburg in the UAE was the extortion of cryptocurrencies. This was announced on November 7 by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Irina Volk.

TV channel 78.ru Earlier that day, it was reported that Roman Novak, a well-known crypto fraudster, and his wife were killed in the UAE. The family was abducted for the purpose of extortion, and when they did not receive a ransom, the couple was killed. The Investigative Committee of Russia (IC RF) has opened a criminal case on the fact of the unknown disappearance of a married couple in the UAE under paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code ("Murder of two persons").

Later it became known that all three suspects in the murder case were arrested, they turned out to be Russians. One of the men, Konstantin Sh., was sentenced to 15 years in 2010 for selling narcotic substances.
