The prosecution has requested up to six years in prison for the defendants in the Pyro-Ross case

The Sergiev Posad City Court held a debate on the criminal case of the explosion at the Pyro-Ross warehouse, which resulted in the death of nine people. This was announced on October 7 by a source of Izvestia.

According to the source, the state prosecution demanded that the technical director of the company, Sergey Chankaev, and his employees, Alexander Varenov and Oleg Yurov, be found guilty of violating industrial safety requirements and sentenced to real terms of imprisonment.

During the court sessions, the state prosecutor stated that the tragedy of August 9, 2023 was a direct result of gross violations on the part of the company's management. According to investigators, the storage of about a ton of smoky gunpowder and pyrotechnics in an unintended room led to a powerful detonation. The blast wave damaged buildings and cars, as well as caused serious harm to the health of the victims.

The representative of the prosecutor's Office announced the position agreed with the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation on sentencing: Sergey Chankaev — six years in prison, Oleg Yurov and Alexander Varenov — five and a half years each in a general regime colony, followed by deprivation of the right to engage in activities at hazardous production facilities. The prosecution stressed that the guilt of the defendants was fully proved by the evidence collected in the case.

Numerous civil claims for compensation for moral damage and material damage are attached to the criminal case, including a claim by the administration of the Sergiev Posad district for 300 million rubles. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty and disagree with the claims.

The explosion on the territory of the Zagorsky Optical and Mechanical Plant (ZOMZ) on Red Army Avenue in Sergiev Posad occurred on the morning of August 9. As a result of the incident, a pyrotechnics storage hangar leased by the Pyro—Ross company was destroyed.

The Investigative Committee of Russia (IC) has opened a criminal case on violation of industrial safety requirements. After that, footage was released showing the moment of the search and interrogation of the detainee Sergei Chankaev.
