With the onset of the autumn-winter season, many are faced with the problem of an unpleasant odor coming from shoes. Wet weather, frequent precipitation and the need to stay in closed, tight shoes for a long time create ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria, which are the main cause of persistent odor. What home and store remedies can be used to protect shoes and feet during this period, Izvestia tells.

Why do shoes start to smell unpleasant

An unpleasant smell from shoes is always a consequence of the activity of bacteria and microscopic fungi. A moist and warm environment inside shoes, especially during periods of slush and cold weather, when feet sweat profusely and shoes get wet, becomes an ideal incubator for microorganisms. They decompose organic substances contained in sweat, which leads to the formation of volatile compounds with a pungent odor. Thus, the key to solving the problem is to control humidity and destroy bacterial flora.

Store-bought shoe odor control products

Modern industry offers a wide range of tools aimed at solving the problem quickly and effectively.

  • Deodorant sprays. This is the most popular and easy-to-use tool. Specialized sprays not only mask the odor, but also have an antibacterial effect. It is recommended to treat the inner surface and insoles after each wear. It is important to use the product in accordance with the instructions to avoid oversaturation and persistent odor of chemicals.

  • Absorbent deodorant dehumidifiers. These products, often made in the form of pouches with natural fillers (zeolite, silica gel, activated carbon), work on the principle of absorbing excess moisture. They are placed inside the shoe at night or while it is not being worn. This is an eco-friendly and safe way for materials to keep dry.

  • Electric dryers. Devices that supply warm air inside shoes allow you to dry them quickly and efficiently after getting wet. Modern models are additionally equipped with ultraviolet lamps, which have a bactericidal effect, destroying microbes. When using such dryers, it is important to follow the instructions in order to avoid overheating and damage to the adhesive bases and materials.

Home and folk methods of getting rid of odor

If the problem is taken by surprise, and there are no specialized tools at hand, proven home methods come to the rescue.

  • Baking soda. Being an excellent natural absorbent, baking soda effectively absorbs both moisture and unpleasant odors. It is enough to pour a small amount of baking soda on the insoles and inside the shoes, leave for several hours or overnight, and then vacuum thoroughly. To enhance the effect, you can additionally stuff your shoes with crumpled newspapers or paper napkins, which will also absorb excess moisture.

  • Talcum powder or baby powder. The principle of action is similar to soda. These products dry the surface, creating an unfavorable environment for bacteria. Regular use of talcum powder after wearing shoes is a good preventive measure.

  • Vinegar. Table vinegar (9%) has pronounced antibacterial properties. To treat shoes, it is recommended to dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:3, pour the resulting solution into a spray bottle and carefully treat the insoles and the inner surface. After that, the shoes must be completely dried in a well-ventilated area. It should be borne in mind that the smell of vinegar may remain for a while, which will subsequently fade.

  • Extreme freezing. Bacteria and fungi do not tolerate extremely low temperatures. By placing shoes in an airtight bag in the freezer for several hours, you can significantly reduce the number of microorganisms. However, this method is not suitable for all types of materials and may negatively affect the condition of the adhesive and sole, so it should be used with caution.

Hygiene and care: how to keep shoes and feet fresh for a long time

However, the fight against an unpleasant odor will be ineffective without eliminating the root cause of its appearance. Following simple hygiene and care rules will keep shoes and feet clean, avoiding negative consequences. Experts recommend:

  • observe the regime of wearing shoes: You should not wear the same pair for two days in a row, as shoes need at least 24 hours to completely dry and ventilate from the inside.;

  • Organize proper storage: shoes should be stored in a dry, well—ventilated place, and wet boots or boots should not be left in closed cabinets or near heating devices, and athletic shoes should not be left in a closed sports bag or bag.;

  • use the right socks: it is better to abandon socks with 100% cotton content, which, when wet, remains wet for a long time, in favor of models made of modern synthetic materials (merryl, polyester, polypropylene) - they more effectively remove moisture from the skin.;

  • Wash and change insoles regularly: insoles are the main accumulator of sweat and bacteria, so they need to be thoroughly washed with soap and periodically replaced with new ones, or purchase special sports or antibacterial insoles with a carbon filter.;

  • To monitor foot hygiene: for this, you can use antiperspirants for feet, which regulate sweating, and wash your feet regularly using antibacterial soap, then drying them thoroughly.;

  • properly dry and clean shoes: when entering a room, shoes must be cleaned of street dirt and dried at room temperature, and special spacers or natural fillers such as newsprint can also be used.

Following these recommendations in combination with the use of suitable products will help to keep shoes in perfect condition and avoid discomfort in any season.
