WSJ reported heavy damage to Canada's economy due to Trump's tariffs
The duties imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canada are beginning to cause serious damage to its economy. The Wall Street Journal writes about this on November 7.
"The United States' second—largest trading partner is in recession, unemployment has reached its highest level in almost a decade, and business investment has stalled," the article says.
Nowhere are the effects of Trump's trade policy felt more keenly than in Canada's manufacturing hub, the newspaper writes. The provinces of Ontario and Quebec, where more than 33,000 enterprises are located, suffered the most damage. The unemployment rate in Ontario, Canada's most populous province, was 7.9% in September, higher than the national average of 7.1%. In Windsor, the center of the automotive industry, this figure exceeds 11%.
According to experts, few companies are willing to invest in existing plants or open new ones while trade uncertainty persists. Exports of Canadian industrial products, which mainly go to the United States, decreased by 15.6% in August 2025 compared to February, the last month before Trump imposed new duties.
Earlier, on October 23, Trump announced the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada due to the distribution by this country of allegedly fake advertisements about former US President Ronald Reagan. The American president clarified that such an action by Canada is outrageous. On October 26, Trump announced that the trade duties imposed by Washington against Ottawa would be increased by 10%.
