Narcologist warned about the consequences of using betel nut
The consumption of betel nut, also known as binlan, is highly addictive, and also leads to tooth loss and esophageal cancer. Vasily Shurov, a narcologist, psychotherapist, and member of the National Narcological League, told Izvestia about this on November 6.
Earlier, the media reported that a dangerous nut from Asia has become popular among teenagers. The fruits of benlan have a detrimental effect on the psyche and provoke health problems.
"People lose their teeth, they have cancer of the esophagus, stomach occurs against the background of eating this nut. <...> Insomnia, restlessness, psychosis with overdose, hallucinations. Any psychostimulant disrupts the brain," Shurov said.
Among the signs of eating betel nut are red—stained teeth, overexcitation, sleep disorders, decreased appetite, glistening eyes and dilated pupils.
On October 31, Victoria Radko, an orthodontist and head of the orthodontic department at the EUROKAPPA Clinic Scientific and Clinical Center, said that lollipops are the most dangerous sweets for teeth. According to the expert, it is these candies that cause the greatest damage to the enamel, provoke the development of caries, and with frequent use can even affect the formation of bite in children.
