- The UN reported the flight of 82 thousand residents of El Fasher in Sudan due to the fighting.
The United Nations (UN) is deeply concerned about the consequences of human rights violations in the state of North Darfur in Sudan due to the fighting, against which almost 82,000 civilians have left the state capital. This was announced on November 6 by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
"OCHA is deeply concerned by the growing number of reports of serious violations against civilians during the ongoing fighting in the state of North Darfur in Sudan," the organization's website says.
It is noted that local volunteers have received numerous reports of executions, extortion and attacks on people, as well as other systematic human rights violations, including actions against those fleeing the fighting after the capture of El Fasher last week by the Rapid Reaction Forces (RFS).
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), from October 26 to November 4, about 82,000 people left Al-Fasher and the surrounding areas, including towards the city of Tawila, where hundreds of thousands of people have already fled the attacks. In addition, the humanitarian needs of the region now significantly exceed the available resources.
"OCHA reiterates its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for all parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and the safe, unhindered passage of humanitarian workers and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need," the statement said.
On October 29, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) expressed concern about incoming information about massive human rights violations in the Sudanese city of El Fasher, which came under the control of militants from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group. The Ministry noted that Russia insists on the need to end hostilities and activate a full-scale political process.
The situation in Sudan escalated in mid-April 2023 due to disagreements between the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the head of the Security Council, Mohammed Daglo. Due to the ongoing conflict, a humanitarian crisis has arisen in the country, which has led to famine and outbreaks of disease. Clashes between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group are still ongoing.
