On Friday, November 7, Earth's inhabitants will face increased geomagnetic activity. According to experts, the impending magnetic storm may become the most powerful in the last year. This will lead to strong fluctuations in the magnetic field and may cause disruptions to navigation and electrical systems. What to expect and how to prepare for weather—dependent conditions is in the Izvestia article.

Magnetic storm on November 7, 2025

According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), a powerful geomagnetic storm is expected on Friday, November 7, 2025 — the strongest in a year and one of the most intense in the last few years.

The laboratory's specialists have already created the first model of the movement of plasma clouds ejected by the Sun on their way to Earth, and have also prepared a preliminary forecast of geomagnetic activity. However, current calculations do not take into account the latest, nocturnal outburst, so the forecast will be updated during the day, and the storm is likely to intensify.

The model of the movement of solar plasma resembles the events of May 11-12 last year, when several emissions combined into a single giant cloud and caused a high-level magnetic storm G5. Now, even without taking into account the overnight outburst, the forecast for Friday shows geomagnetic activity at the G3-G4 level, that is, from strong to very strong. After recalculation based on the latest data, the range can reach G4-G5.

According to experts, the impact will be marginal: the core of the plasma cloud will pass slightly away from the Earth, and the planet will be affected only by peripheral areas of the ejection. However, according to experts, past calculations showed a weak effect, while the actual clouds passing at a considerable distance still led to strong planetary disturbances. Visual observations confirm that the emissions are indeed moving towards Earth.

Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center, said in his Telegram channel that the weakening of geomagnetic disturbances would begin on the night of November 8, and the situation should return to normal on November 9.

What is a magnetic storm: the nature of the phenomenon

Magnetic storms are fluctuations and disturbances of the Earth's magnetic field that occur as a result of activity on the Sun. During solar flares, a stream of energy and charged particles is released into outer space, which, upon reaching the planet, affects its magnetosphere.

Such phenomena are observed on average 5-6 times a year and can last from several hours to several days.

Depending on the strength of the impact, magnetic storms are classified into five levels, denoted by the letter G. Thus, G1 is considered a weak storm, while G5 is considered extremely strong and potentially dangerous for technology and human health.

How magnetic storms affect humans

The greatest sensitivity to geomagnetic fluctuations is typical for weather-dependent people. They may experience headaches, tachycardia, nausea, pressure drops, and sleep disturbances during periods of storms.

According to Veronika Lisitskaya, a therapist at the BestDoctor group of companies, such symptoms are more often associated with chronic diseases: hypertension, anemia, the consequences of a stroke or heart attack. In healthy people, as the doctor notes, significant disorders of well-being usually do not occur when the magnetic background changes.

How to safely survive magnetic storms

Although the effect of geomagnetic activity on the body has not yet been fully studied, there are measures that help mitigate possible manifestations.

People with hypertension are advised to drink more water and reduce their salt intake. For those with low blood pressure, it is useful to take tinctures of eleutherococcus or lemongrass. With iron deficiency anemia, it is worth paying attention to foods and supplements with iron: dried fruits, apples, green vegetables, dates and liver.

It is also useful to undergo basic examinations: a general blood test, checking the level of iron, ferritin and TSH. It is recommended to lead a healthy lifestyle: engage in physical activity regularly, limit alcohol and quit smoking, and coffee can be replaced with herbal infusions.

The impact of magnetic storms on technology and nature

Geomagnetic disturbances affect not only people, but also machinery. They can disrupt GPS and satellite surveillance systems, as well as create overloads in electrical networks, which sometimes leads to power outages.

In particular, representatives of SpaceX reported that 40 of the 49 recently launched Starlink microsatellites failed during a strong magnetic storm in orbit. In addition, magnetic storms can cause rare natural phenomena.
