China announced the development of a nuclear ship reactor
China is developing a revolutionary nuclear-powered cargo ship. This was reported on November 6 by the Chinese newspaper SCMP.
"It will be equipped with a thorium—based molten salt reactor <...> with a thermal capacity of 200 megawatts, which corresponds to the power level of the S6W pressurized water reactor used on the most modern Seawolf-class nuclear submarines of the US Navy," the publication says.
It is specified that thorium is a safer nuclear fuel compared to uranium.
According to the publication, the reactor will be installed on the world's largest container ship, which is being developed in China. The vessel will be able to carry 14,000 containers, and will also be equipped with a thorium reactor that will generate 50 MW of electricity, sufficient capacity for long—term operation without the need for refueling. In case of an emergency, to ensure reliability, the vessel will also be equipped with a backup diesel generator with a capacity of 10 MW.
If this technology proves successful in its application, it could significantly change the paradigm in commercial shipping and naval shipbuilding.
Earlier, on November 4, the Chinese company XPeng Aridge (formerly AeroHT) launched test production of a car with a Land Aircraft Carrier (LAC) flying module. Mass production and deliveries will start in 2026.
