The State Duma appreciated the proposal to reduce school summer holidays
Oleg Smolin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education (KPRF), did not support the proposal to reduce school summer holidays. He stated this on Wednesday, November 5, commenting on the relevant initiative of Olga Yaroslavskaya, the Commissioner for Children's Rights in Moscow.
"And I'm sure that if we asked schoolchildren if they wanted summer holidays to be shortened by a month, the vast majority of children and, I think, most teachers would be against it," the deputy told the Moscow City News agency.
According to Smolin, the issue of child care and their safety during long holidays can be solved by organizing summer holidays in children's camps, and shortening the length of school holidays can adversely affect children's health, he believes.
The parliamentarian recalled that in some countries June is a school month, but there is no need to take an example from this international experience.
"I don't think we need to imitate other countries in their practices if they are worse than ours. I think that a three—month summer vacation is rather our advantage," he concluded.
Olga Yaroslavskaya, the Commissioner for Children's Rights in Moscow, proposed on November 3 to reduce the duration of summer holidays to two months, the National News Service reports.
According to the Ombudsman, in fact, the educational process ends in April: after the May holidays and final assessments, students stop learning new topics and go on long summer holidays. At the same time, parents often face the problem of what to do with their children during this period, RT reports.
Yaroslavskaya proposed making June an academic month, devoting it to creative disciplines — drawing, music, physical education, writes Moscow 24. She stressed that this would require reviewing the timing of the Unified State Exam.\
