The dog handler warned about deadly traps for dogs in the cold season
Non-freezing antifreeze, which is an indispensable product for motorists in the cold season, turns into an additional danger for dog breeders during walks. Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told Izvestia about this on November 6.
"This liquid is extremely toxic to both humans and animals. The danger lies not only in direct access to the liquid. Even if a pet is not in the habit of tasting water on the street, it can bring dangerous liquid on its paws and lick it at home, as traces of antifreeze often remain on roads and fall into puddles," he warned.
The danger of antifreeze lies in its composition, which includes ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or methanol. These coolants are very toxic and are well absorbed into the body, while the lethal dose for a dog is approximately 4.4 ml per 1 kg of body weight. The sweet taste of many of these liquids is particularly dangerous, which can encourage a pet to explore an unfamiliar smell and lick its paw after contact with a toxic puddle.
"The first symptoms of poisoning appear within 30 minutes and resemble typical severe poisoning, accompanied by vomiting, shortness of breath and increased salivation. After a while, there is unsteadiness of gait, fainting and convulsions, which is associated with the effects of the poison on the central nervous system," explained Golubev.
Although the poison does not work immediately and death occurs within three days without treatment, he said, it is necessary to act as quickly as possible. At the first symptoms of poisoning, the animal should be immediately taken to a veterinary clinic, since any delay can cost its life or lead to disability.
Treatment requires specific antidote therapy to block the poison, so it is impossible to provide help at home — urgent veterinarian help is needed. To prevent a tragedy, the dog handler recommends limiting the dog's movements in the garage or near the car, and avoiding potentially dangerous places when walking. The dog must clearly follow the commands "fu" and "no" in case of interest in suspicious objects, and obedience should be encouraged with treats.
In the cold season, special shoes or shoe covers can be an additional measure of protection, which will protect the paws not only from frost, but also from contact with toxins. After each walk, it is necessary to carefully check the pet's paws and rinse them with a special foam.
In October, Zoey Parr-Cortez, a veterinarian and PhD candidate at the University of Bristol, said dogs' hypersensitive noses may have been developed to help them sense danger. According to scientific research, dogs are able to sense human emotions due to their outstanding sense of smell.
