- Donated tissues from a South Korean resident will be able to save about a hundred people.
A South Korean resident bequeathed his donated organs to dozens of people and thus gave them a chance at life. This is reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper with reference to the Korean Organ Donation Agency (KODA).
Moon Joo Hwan, 60, lost consciousness on August 9, 2025, and was taken to Cheongmoon University Hospital. Doctors diagnosed brain death. During his lifetime, the man was an organ donor and always carried a donor card with him. All his biological materials were transferred to the National Institute of Organ, Tissue and Blood Management.
The article notes that due to the fact that Moon Joo Hwan registered as a donor before his death, with the help of his tissues it will be possible to save about 100 people who suffer from functional disorders.
"Human tissues, unlike organs that need to be transplanted immediately, can be stored for up to five years," the agency's statement said.
The New York Times (NYT) reported that cases of premature and unsuccessful organ harvesting from still-living patients who agreed to become donors after death have become more frequent in US hospitals. It was clarified that most of the organs belonging to donors come from people whose brains are considered dead. However, these patients are still living, even though they are connected to life support systems. According to the newspaper, some non-profit organizations "aggressively pursue" the donors themselves and their families in order to obtain their consent for surgical intervention.
