The media reported on Mamdani's alleged victory in the New York mayoral election
Self-proclaimed democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani will become the 111th mayor of New York and the first Muslim to lead the city. This was announced on November 5 by the MSNBC television channel.
It is noted that the 34-year-old candidate beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate.
In his election program, Mamdani promised to freeze apartment rents for certain categories of people, open city grocery stores, provide the city with free buses, and provide free childcare services.
The publication emphasizes that Mamdani's victory may prompt US President Donald Trump to withhold federal funding, thereby "punishing" the city.
No official voting results were announced, but the leading American media has already declared Mamdani the winner.
Earlier, on November 3, Trump said he could limit federal funding for New York if the Democratic candidate Mamdani wins the mayoral election. He noted that with such an outcome, the city would face an "economic and social catastrophe," and his principles, according to the former president, "have never brought success."
