- The Norwegian police announced the modernization of surveillance systems on the border with the Russian Federation
Norway will allocate 191 million kroner (€16.4 million) for the modernization of the surveillance system on the border with Russia. This was announced on November 4 by the Norwegian National Police Department on its website.
"At the end of 2024, Norway received about 191 million Norwegian kroner (€16.4 million) for the modernization of the Norwegian-Russian border. The money was allocated as part of the EU Border and Visa Management Instrument (BMVI). These funds provide for significant improvement of border control along the external border. This gives local and national authorities better opportunities to ensure our safety and our national interests," the publication says.
The first works will begin at the site of the former checkpoint "Scafferhullet" in the municipality of Ser Varanger. For this purpose, an interdepartmental group has been created with the participation of the police, the Norwegian Armed forces and the immigration Service. The 5 million kronor project includes the installation of new towers, sensors and the use of drones (UAVs).
Lieutenant Colonel of the Defense Staff Rune Rippon noted that the strengthening of border control is associated with a change in security policy in Europe.
On October 28, the ERR broadcasting company announced that the construction of a radar station in Ida-Virumaa county bordering the Russian Federation had been completed in Estonia. The station is installed on the terricon of the former Viru mine and is designed to monitor the airspace of the eastern part of the country. Construction work is also continuing in the region, including the construction of a military facility in the village of Vasknarva.
